The big concept I want you to understand with all of these sleep habits is that all of these are to increase, support, or preserve your melatonin production. A real quick overview. Melatonin is the Dracula hormone. It comes out only when it is dark. Melatonin not only makes you sleepy. It is your body’s strongest antioxidant. It also plays a role in the following areas
-Scavenges free radicals better than any vitamin you can take
-Inhibits chemicals that cause inflammation
-Prevents your mitochondria from killing themselves
-Keeps your cell membranes from becoming rancid
-Prevents cancers from forming
-Slows the growth of cancers that have already formed
-Reduces your blood pressure
-Reduces your blood sugar
-Keeps your mood stable in your turbulent life
-Keeps your brain strong as you age
-Makes you more resistant to pain
-Helps with fertility
Melatonin is like liquid gold for your body. Who wouldn’t want to take a supplement that does all of this? Melatonin from a pill does not have the same effects though. So don’t think you can substitute it.
The best analogy I can come up with for melatonin is this. Imagine melatonin is money. Each night you are going to get paid $100. That is the max you can earn. You can earn $10 each hour. Say you go to bed and only get 5 hours of sleep. You made $50 out of $100. But wait it is actually less. Some of the actions you took before bed like eating some icecream, having a glass of wine, and scrolling social media are like taxes. That $50 now is $25.
Your body needs as close to the $100 each night to pay for repairs. How many repairs can be done with only $25?
Keep robbing your body of melatonin and you are going to go into debt. Your house is going to start falling apart because you do not have the money to pay for repairs. Eventually the damage is unable to be repaired.
