Today I want to talk to you about the Dep Slepwear Hoodie (pronounced Deep Sleepwear.
Do you consider sleep an activity? When you go to the gym you put on your workout gear. When you head to the office you have your professional wear. What about sleep? Have you ever put any thought into what you are wearing to bed and the quality of your sleep?
A large portion of the population that is waking up in the middle of the night is due to overheating and outside stimuli like noise or light. This usually occurs as you come out of REM or Deep sleep into a lighter sleep stage.
If your body is having to work hard at night to keep you cool, it takes away from its ability to spend more time in your deep sleep stage. Your deep sleep stage is when your body recharges its batteries, repairs cells, tissues, and bone. So many cool things happen during this stage.
Just think back to the summer and trying to sleep without A/C on a hot night. You wake up pretty groggy and unrefreshed. The wrong sleepwear could be creating this same scenario on a mini scale.
Cotton t-shirts hold onto moisture and help to insulate your body. That means it is not letting heat from your body escape causing you to overheat and wake up. This also applies if you are using clothing, sheets,or comforters/duvets that are prone to trapping heat. Yes, you want to be warm, but you want your body also to breathe.
I want to introduce you to something I got for Christmas. It has been on my list of things to try for sleep for a while.
The product is called the Dep Slepwear Hoodie.
It is a multi functional, high performance sleep top. What do I mean by multifunctional?
Well for starters it has a super soft eye mask built into the hood that blocks out light wonderfully and doesn’t get hot against the face. Then when flipped up the hoodie creates a cocoon like feeling and helps to deaden noises that occur at night. Last, the material. This is one of the coolest feeling and softest materials I have ever worn. Slipping this on at night, gets me pumped up to sleep.
I have some interesting data to accompany this. I got the Dep Slepwear hoodie the last week of December. For my sleep tracking I have an Oura ring with almost 2 years of data. So my personal trends are pretty set.
Take a look. Here is my respiration rate. As you can see it dips down for January and February. A lower respiration rate means my body is not working as hard to stay cool.
Next, we have my readiness score. The Oura readiness score is an algorithm combining multiple factors including sleep, HRV, heart rate, and daytime activity. A higher readiness level is desired and as you can see that has increased also since wearing the hoodie.
Our third screenshot has to do with heart rate variability (HRV). HRV is a measurement of your nervous system and how recovered you are. If you have a low HRV it means your body is under stress and to take it easy. A higher HRV means your body is ready to take on the challenges of the day. Everyone has their own baseline HRV. My average over the 2 years is around 54, but had dipped in Oct, Nov, Dec. There is a big jump in January and February.
The last and final one is resting heart rate. When your body is hot, your heart will beat faster to circulate blood faster and try and cool your body off. My baseline is 41bpm for my resting heart rate. After the hoodie, my heart rate has dropped to 40 and 39 bpm at night.
Pretty cool stuff. Literally and figuratively. If you are someone that sleeps hot, or has a room that is not pitch black or just wants something awesome to sleep in check out this up and coming company.
They also offer a sleep set that is a combo hoodie and shorts.
